The Biggest Mistake Managers Make

The biggest mistake that managers make is believing that their primary focus is on managing and “getting in line” their team members (generally called “subordinates”).

As a manager your primary focus should be on managing one’s self. If you can’t manage your behavior, biases, beliefs, and time, then how in the world do you think you can manage one, ten, twenty, fifty, or more than 100 other people?

Great managers lead by example.

A company’s culture and environment is shaped by senior management, and it funnels down and throughout the company. Toxicity (just like a healthy work environment) starts from the top.

If you’re stressed out you will most likely take it out on others, and the vast majority of the time it won’t be a leader who you report to, but rather someone who reports to you. Your behavior is your responsibility and if you can’t manage it properly then what kind of leader are you?

At the beginning and end of each day, the buck stops with you. You are the captain and if the ship goes down, you’re responsible for staying behind with the vessel. not abandoning it with your crew still aboard.

If you’re always late don’t expect your team to be on time or early.

If you’re rude to other team members or to clients, don’t be surprised to see your team behave the same way.

If you produce substandard work then don’t place higher standards on your team.

If mediocrity is acceptable to you then it will also be accepted by your team.

Managers must bear the responsibility of first and always focusing on self-management, and through your mastery you can then be the best managers for your team.

What’s Missing From Your Business?

You work five to six days a week and your cell phone and email have become an extension of you. Your weekends seem shorter and you’re secretly envious of your social media friends and their vacation and staycation posts, workplace fun pics, and other exciting news that they regularly share. You’re focused on the daily “grind” of helping your company fulfill its mission and vision, but something is off. Answer the questions below, honestly:

  • Is there anything that seems particularly difficult right now in your business or daily work grind?
  • When you look around the office or listen in on conference calls, do you see the look of passion, zest, and excitement on the faces (and in the voices) of your team members?
  • Are managers stressed out or energized?
  • Is employee turnover low, high, or at a decent level?
  • Do you and your team members come to work early and leave late, or do you show up late and leave early (or mentally “check out” early)?
  • Do team members hang out and associate outside of the office?
  • How often does your team spend quality time with the senior leaders of your company learning about their passions and their desire for the team to reach organizational goals and milestones?
  • Do senior and mid-level leaders within your company ever “walk the floor” connecting with team members (including frontline) to see how they are doing professionally and personally?
  • Does your company have a focus on helping employees reach career goals?
  • When employees are terminated is the process ruthless and cutthroat? Does the process resemble a trip to HR followed by the infamous “your desk has already been boxed up and security will escort you to your vehicle”? Or is there a level of care and concern for the employee and the impact that their departure will have on the rest of the team?

The Importance of Team Work

Have you ever heard the saying, “teamwork makes the dream work“? 

Yes, it’s a catchy phrase and an accurate one. 

Imagine companies attempting to get massive loads of work done with people working independently of each other, no collaborative effort on anyone’s part, and no solidarity when times got tough. Not much would get accomplished. 

People can think that they can “Do this by myself” but the truth is, a team makes the impossible possible, the unimaginable a reality, and a mounting workload that much smaller. 

Teams allow you to look at a scenario through different lenses, conquer an issue from different angles and at a faster pace, and come up with more potential solutions to a problem than one person alone. 

Yes, one person can assemble a car on their own, but Henry Ford was bold enough to say something to the effect 0f, “Let’s try an assembly line and see just how many cars we can assemble with several men all contributing to the task”. By golly, Ford cranked out more cars in one day than they were doing in weeks. 

Proof that team work does make the dream work. 

So pick your business teams wisely, like you would a championship game or an operating team, consider if it were a life and death situation—would you be casual and nonchalant about something as serious as that? Well depending on the magnitude of the situation, your business team could be the difference between your project or your company living or dying. 

You can curate a superstar team or a group of floppers. Your team should be assembled based on each person’s strengths and how those individual strengths connect with the project or plan that you are working on. Each team member should complement the others, so that synergy is developed. When your team is strong and solid they become interconnected. They become a unit. A healthy team realizes that they are only as strong as their weakest link, so they work together to strengthen their weak points and close up any gaps.
